Wegovy, or semaglutide, mimics the action of incretin, which is a hormone released in the gut following food intake.

Wegovy is a prescription weight loss medication suitable for adult patients who are overweight or obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It is also available to adult patients with a weight-related health condition who have a BMI of 27 or higher. 


Wegovy, or semaglutide, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means that it mimics the function of the naturally occurring hormone, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This incretin hormone is released by the intestines in response to food intake. 


Through mimicking this hormone, Wegovy helps feel full sooner after eating, and suppresses food cravings. It also regulates blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin when blood sugar levels are high.

Wegovy is a weight loss medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It is prescribed to manage excess weight and obesity, and to regulate blood sugar.

Wegovy was also approved to help lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people diagnosed with heart and circulatory diseases.





Wegovy is prescribed for adult patients who are overweight or obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher.

It is also available to adult patients with a weight-related health condition who have a BMI of 27 or higher.





Wegovy mimics the hormone, GLP-1, which regulates appetite and blood sugar levels.
It helps patients to feel full sooner after eating, and suppresses appetite.




Wegovy treatment is administered via a pre-filled injector pen. It is self-administered weekly, under the skin in the upper arms, stomach, thighs or buttocks.

The starting dose of Wegovy is 0.25mg once a week, this will be gradually increased every four weeks.

Mild can include:

- Constipation or diarrhoea

- Nausea or vomiting
